Problem · No single source of truth
Three departments, three revenue figures.
When every department maintains its own spreadsheet, the leadership team debates sources instead of decisions. A single source of truth isn't a dashboard but a shared model.
Metrics and sources check
One metric, one definition, one source.
Enter the numbers you argue about in meetings: how it is defined, which system it comes from, and who owns it. Where there is a question mark or two sources, that's where the dispute lies.

Assumptions and limits
- The map clarifies which number counts. It doesn't reconcile data between systems.
- For tax and year-end close, accounting stays the source, whatever you decide internally.
- A definition only holds if someone is accountable for it. Empty fields in the last column are the real task.
Your entries stay in this browser. Nothing is saved or sent.
How you'll notice
The meeting starts with the question of which number is right.
- Sales, finance and projects report different statuses for the same customer.
- Nobody can say which source a number in the report comes from.
- Decisions are postponed until the numbers are reconciled.
Understand the causes
Why Company numbers contradict each other.
- 01
Same word, different definition
- How you'll notice
- Sales reports revenue at order, finance at invoice or payment receipt.
- Why it happens
- Nobody has defined exactly what a metric measures.
- What helps
- For each metric, write a one-sentence definition in the leadership meeting.
- Limit
- Different views can stay if they have different names.
- 02
Each department has its own spreadsheet
- How you'll notice
- Numbers are rebuilt from exports and sent around by email.
- Why it happens
- An export is outdated the moment it's pulled.
- What helps
- For each metric, name a leading system and label copies as copies.
- Limit
- Without a connection between the systems, reconciliation stays manual work.
- 03
Different due dates
- How you'll notice
- Two reports show the same month with different numbers.
- Why it happens
- One report was pulled on the first of the month, the other after the late postings.
- What helps
- Agree on a fixed cutoff date for monthly figures and state it in the report.
- Limit
- Late postings still change numbers. The cutoff date just makes that visible.
- 04
Numbers without a source
- How you'll notice
- Asked where a number comes from, a search follows.
- Why it happens
- Reports show results, but not the path to them.
- What helps
- Write the source and date under every number in the report.
- Limit
- With manual reports, this costs time. In the meeting, it saves more than it costs.
Dashboard or model
A dashboard shows numbers. One model makes them the same.
Dashboard across silos
- Reads from tools that contradict each other
- Shows numbers without provenance
- Has to be rebuilt with every tool change
One model in Peak One
- Every object exists once
- Every number says what it's calculated from
- Apps change, the objects stay
Ways to solve it
From the definition all the way to the shared model.
| Way | Enough if | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Metrics map as above | You argue about a few metrics and can set definitions together. | Clarifies terms, connects no systems. |
| Shared reporting table with a fixed cutoff date | One person pulls the numbers together monthly, and that's enough to steer by. | Manual work and a month of delay. |
| Data warehouse with dashboard | You have many systems and someone who builds and maintains data models. | Laborious; daily work keeps running in the old tools. |
| Peak One | Apps should work on the same objects, and every number should show what it is calculated from. | Connected tools remain the source of their data. You still set the definitions yourselves. |

Peak One in action
From the disputed number to the number that applies.

- 01 · MetricSignalData Quality answers whether you can trust your numbers.
- 02 · SourceUnderstandingIntegration Health shows whether all integrations that feed the number are running.
- 03 · CustomerDecisionCustomer Identity Resolution shows whether the same customer is recognized across all systems or counted twice.
- 04 · DocumentActionThe agreed definition is in Peak Docs; Document Decisions finds it again.
The apps for it
Available in Peak One.
Three steps
One number, that everyone refers to.
- 01 / 03
Collect the disputed numbers
In the next meeting, note every number someone asks about whether it's right.
- 02 / 03
Set definition and source
For each metric, a one-sentence definition, a leading system, and a responsible person.
- 03 / 03
Record the source
Every report lists the source and as-of date below the number. Deviations stand out right away.
Frequently asked questions
Briefly answered.
Why do our company numbers contradict each other?
Usually for one of three reasons: the metric is defined differently, the numbers come from different systems, or they were pulled on different dates. The map above shows which reason applies to you.
Isn't a single source of truth just a data warehouse?
A data warehouse collects copies for analysis. In Peak One, the apps themselves work on the same model, so daily work and analysis agree.
Do I have to bring all my data into Peak One for that?
No. Connected tools remain the source of their data; Peak maps it to the central objects and shows where it came from.
