Problem · Decisions get postponed

On the agenda for six weeks. Nothing is decided.

Postponed decisions cost quietly: projects wait, people keep working on a hunch. Usually it's not courage that is missing, but a name and a date.

Decision template

One question, one name, a date.

Enter your open decisions. Each needs a clear question, a few options, one accountable person, and a date.

Assumptions and limits

  • The template doesn't force a decision. It makes visible who makes it by when.
  • Whoever decides may ask others. But asking doesn't mean voting, unless you agree on that beforehand.
  • None of it is saved or sent. Copy the result before you close the page.

How you'll notice

Everyone waits. Nobody decides.

  • The same item has been on the agenda for weeks and is postponed every time.
  • Projects stall because an approval is missing.
  • The team keeps working on a hunch and has to replan later.

Understand the causes

Why decisions get stuck.

  1. 01

    Nobody is in charge

    How you'll notice
Everyone discusses, but nobody says at the end: this is how we do it.
    Why it happens
It is not set who makes this decision.
    What helps
For each open decision, name a person who decides.
    Limit
The person needs the authority, otherwise the decision gets reopened.
  2. 02

    The question is vague

    How you'll notice
The discussion jumps back and forth between several questions.
    Why it happens
A topic like "sales" isn't a decision but a bundle of them.
    What helps
Phrase the decision as a question with two to three options.
    Limit
Big decisions sometimes have to be split into several small ones.
  3. 03

    Waiting for complete information

    How you'll notice
There's always one more number, quote, or opinion missing.
    Why it happens
Uncertainty is mistaken for waiting; complete information rarely arrives.
    What helps
Decide which piece of information is still missing and by when it will be there.
    Limit
For expensive, irreversible decisions, thoroughness is right.
  4. 04

    No appointment

    How you'll notice
The decision has no date, so it is never overdue.
    Why it happens
Whatever has no appointment loses to everything that does.
    What helps
Give every open decision a date by which it gets made.
    Limit
An appointment only helps if someone follows up.

Frequently asked questions

Briefly answered.

What if the information isn't enough yet?

Then name the one piece of information that is missing and who gets it by when. The decision date moves accordingly, but it does not disappear.

Should we vote as a team?

For questions that affect everyone and have several good answers, a vote helps. Agree beforehand whether the result is binding or only gathers opinions.

How does this differ from the use case Decisions in the team?

This page helps with individual decisions that keep getting stuck. The use case shows how a team prepares, makes, and records decisions in general.
