Contribution margin calculator

Net selling price, variable costs per unit and quantity yield contribution margin per unit, total contribution margin and contribution margin rate. Fixed costs and taxes are not taken into account.

Cut-out composition: an open gold-and-burgundy safe with a long paper strip, stacked gold coins, an empty desk calendar and a golden key – a metaphor for keeping cash flow in view.

Inputs

Excluding VAT, after discount.

Materials, third-party services, commission, shipping, payment fees – everything incurred with each unit.

Units in the period considered.

Inputs are processed only in your browser. Nothing is stored or transmitted. Either comma or period works as the decimal separator.

Contribution margin per unit = net price − variable costs · Total contribution margin = contribution margin per unit × quantity · Contribution margin rate = contribution margin per unit ÷ net price (only if price > 0)

Contribution margin per unit

–

What's left per unit to cover fixed costs.

Total contribution margin

–

CM per unit × quantity

Contribution margin rate

–

No profit: Fixed costs (rent, salaries, insurance), taxes, interest, and depreciation are not deducted here. The contribution margin shows only what contributes to covering those costs.

Limits

What the calculator doesn't answer.

  • Contribution margin is not profit: fixed costs, taxes, interest and depreciation are not deducted.
  • Variable costs per unit must be complete (materials, outsourced services, commission, shipping, payment fees).
  • Negative values are displayed plainly – they mean that every unit sold increases the loss.
